Iran: The IRGC Basij centers targeted across the country

Rebellious youth in different Iranian cities have been targeting the Iranian regime’s suppressive centers, including several Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Basij centers and branches of the judiciary, which has become much hated for executing political prisoners and giving heavy prison sentences to protesters.

Five IRGC bases and Basij headquarters were set ablaze in major cities such as Isfahan, Hamedan, Lahijan, and Nishabur in recent days.

The Basij are the most hated suppressive paramilitary force inside Iran. Its main role is to preserve the mullahs’ rule through repressive measures against protests and demonstrations.

The Basij played a prominent role in quelling the November 2019 protests and are part of the regime’s new plan to increase repressive measures on the anniversary of the uprising.

In Gachsaran, the brave youths set fire to a judiciary branch in response to suppressive measures taken against political prisoners.

In recent months, following the execution of 27-year-old wrestling champion, Navid Afkari and more death sentences issued for other political prisoners, Iranian youth have been frequently targeting the regime’s suppressive centers and judiciary offices in various cities.

Also, in Qom, the defiant youth-targeted a center focused on promoting the mullahs’ fundamentalist ideology. The regime uses these widely hated sites to spread propaganda and boost suppressive measures against the population. Meanwhile, in Shiraz and Neyshabur, the rebellious youths torched a banner of the Iranian regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and the images and posters of the regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei to show their rejection of the regime in its entirety. The MOIS carries out propaganda, espionage, and terror operations against protesters, dissidents, intellectuals, and members and supporters of the opposition inside Iran and abroad.

The UK should list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group and describe Tehran’s detainment of British dual nationals as hostage-taking, a group of UK MPs has said.

The UK House of Commons foreign affairs committee made the proposals in a new report focusing on the threat posed by Iran.

The report says the UK’s approach toward dual-national detainees is “not working.”

There are now four British-Iranian dual nationals facing jail terms and other punishments in Iran, including Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

“The UK government must call the arbitrary detention of foreign nationals what it is: Hostage-taking,” said Tom Tugendhat, the select committee chair.“The charges, trials, and convictions of British citizens on Iranian soil are a parody of a justice system. Using young mothers and retirees as bargaining chips and leverage is an unacceptable form of diplomacy,” he added.“The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has faced criticism for its apparent inertia and lackluster response to state-sponsored hostage-taking, and it is clear that a more decisive, coordinated approach is needed.” The report said the Foreign Office should “toughen” its approach in negotiating the releases of UK dual nationals, in part by warning Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that following human rights norms is required for good relations with the West. The mechanisms available to the UK to secure releases are “entirely ineffectual,” the report added. The committee said the UK “should advocate a standalone addition to the 1979 Hostages Convention, which defines ‘State Hostage-Taking’ and prohibits its practice.”MPs called for the IRGC to be listed as a terrorist group due to its “clear and enduring support for terrorists and non-state actors working to undermine stability in the region.”

Scientific independence is the source of power: IRGC chief

While most politicians and analysts consider politics, economy, or culture as the main source of independence for nations, “scientific independence is a source of power for a nation,” IRGC Commander Hossein Salami said on Monday.

Talking in a ceremony at Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, the major general said a country cannot be considered important how much big its geographical size would be because economic resources are limited but a country can create new potential through science.

“A country will become great if it develops scientifically,” the senior commander remarked. He warned what makes Iran vulnerable to foreigners is “dependence”.“We have enemies who are making strenuous efforts to keep us ‘small and underdeveloped,’ because a country that remains undeveloped will be weakened and will be forced to surrender. But if a country gets rid of the scientific domination of foreigners and produces its basic needs it will remain alive and prosperous even if it comes under global boycott,” the IRGC chief commented. He added, “Today the enemies have slapped cruel sanctions on us and even do not give medicine to us and assassinate our scientists.”The general was openly referring to the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh outside Tehran on November 27, a scientist who played a key role in manufacturing test kits for the Coronavirus. When a person active in science is assassinated it means that the enemy “has targeted our scientific development and power and the place that the enemy focuses on that is our strong point.” The senior commander said the enemy is now using the medicine, food, water, and treatment as a pressure tool against Iran. IRGC Chief Major General Hossein Salami stressed the need for the enhancement of Iran’s scientific capabilities, which he said have become a target of hostile actions.

While political, economic, or cultural power is usually considered as a factor behind the independence of nations, the real source of power is scientific independence, the IRGC commander said at an event held by Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences on Monday.

“The society will grow if a country’s scientific resources are developed,” the general added. The fact that the enemies have imposed cruel sanctions on Iran, even on the delivery of medicine, and assassinate Iranian scientists reveals that they have targeted the Islamic Republic’s scientific growth and power, Major General Salami said.“Today, the enemies have waged a war against us in all spheres, including medicine, food, water, and medical care,” the commander warned, adding that determination and efforts would turn the hostile threats into opportunities for progress and development. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has on various occasions highlighted the role of science as a means of power and development, urging efforts to maintain the pace of scientific growth in Iran despite enemy efforts to undermine it. In an address to a gathering of young Iranian elites in October 2018, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the need for scientific progress in the country, saying employment of the potential of elites will boost the country’s power and minimize its vulnerabilities.“If we make scientific progress, the threats from our civilizational, political, and economic enemies will not be permanent and will diminish,” the Leader had announced.“If we make scientific progress, the threats from our civilizational, political, and economic enemies will not be permanent and will diminish,” the Leader had announced.

The United States on Tuesday designated the Bahrain-based Saraya al-Mukhtar group as a terrorist organization, accusing it of being backed by Iran and of having plotted attacks against U.S. personnel in the Gulf Arab state.

The move, which comes amid a slew of sanctions announced by Washington as President Donald Trump’s term nears a close, designates Saraya al-Mukhtar, a marginal group operating underground, as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist”. Most of the group’s members are in jail or in Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saraya al-Mukhtar, or Mukhtar Brigades, was designated for “posing a significant risk of committing acts of terrorism that threaten the national security and foreign policy of the United States”.

The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions against two Iranian officials on Monday in connection to the 2007 abduction of former FBI agent Robert Levinson, authorities said.

The announcement targeted Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai, who are within the Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MOIS), officials said.

“For 13 years, the Iranian government, which continues to take foreigners and dual-nationals hostage as political leverage, has denied knowledge of Mr. Levinson’s whereabouts or condition,” according to a Treasury statement.

“However, senior Iranian officials authorized Levinson’s abduction and detention and launched a disinformation campaign to deflect blame from the Iranian regime. The individuals designated today, Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai, acted in their capacity as MOIS officers in the abduction, detention, and probable death of Mr. Levinson.”

Iran is emptying several of its sites in Syria as a result of ongoing Israeli operations which have increased over the past year, announced Israeli Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi.

“We have struck over 500 targets this year, on all fronts, in addition to multiple clandestine missions,” Kochavi said.

Kochavi, who was briefing a group of Israeli military correspondents, indicated that the Israeli operations slowed down the Iranian entrenchment, however, he said: “we still have a long way to go to complete our goals in this arena.”

Iranian bases, camps, and headquarters have also been moved from the area around Damascus towards the northern and eastern parts of Syria, and the number of Iranian troops and militia members also shrunk considerably in the past few months. The Chief also revealed that the military has carried out cyberattacks, indicating there were several “offensive operations” in the cybersphere, which he described as “the most significant combat arena that has changed this year.”Kochavi said 2020 was a successful operational military year in terms of protecting the borders, strengthening defense, and preventing attempts to infiltrate into Israel. The army also reduced attacks in the West Bank, which recorded a significant drop in the number of incidents and deaths. Within the framework of the Israeli military activities that are part of the so-called “war between wars”, Kochavi said that there was an increase in the frequency and quality of operations and an expansion of the range of covert activities. The year 2020 also witnessed close cooperation with foreign armies, including training and exchange of military expertise, with a focus on the US army, as multiple activities were strengthened in operational and technological fields, said the Chief.

An exclusive investigation by Iran International TV funds, an independent Persian broadcast network, examined the mechanism through which Iran succeeds in using a loophole in the banking system to redirect money to terrorism.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Iran’s military strongarm, manipulates the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) which has a system in place for businesses to trade foreign currencies at lower rates.

The IRGC effectively impersonates official money-lenders to buy “tens of millions of dollars and euros” from exporters at the black-market rate of upwards of 260,000 rials, or the equivalent of $6.18, a senior manager at the Iranian banking system told Iran International TV on the condition of anonymity. This operation is called Nima. Since March, $15 billion worth of foreign currencies have been inflated and sold by the Nima system, Abdolnaser Hemmati, CBI’s governor, said.CBI is apparently aware of the IRGC’s operations, specifically that the money is diverted to the IRGC’s Quds Force, which answers to Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. Back in May, Adel Azam, chairman of Iran’s Court of accounts, accused the Iranian government of corruption in the form of mismanaging state funds. His annual budget report, titled “Summary of Budget Fraud in 1397 (2018),” couldn’t directly accuse Khamenei or the IRGC of anything. He had to do implicitly what this investigation definitively. The official currency rate is 42,000 rials —  the equivalent of $1. That’s more than five times the rate. The money should be used to import necessary, day-to-day products. Nearly a month ago, the IDF announced that an explosives-ridden terrorist cell in the Golan Heights is actually being operated by the Quds Force, which backs unofficial military groups throughout the Middle East, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
