Iran picks a cyber fight with Israel as both sides target critical infrastructure

The simmering cyber conflict between Iran and Israel reached a boiling point this week as the two enemies have been going tit-for-tat in an effort to quietly take down critical infrastructure that security analysts dub something of an electronic cold war. cyber fight

“The fact that Iran is behaving so aggressively, and trying to disrupt critical services in Israel, is very disturbing,” David Kennedy, founder/CEO of TrustedSec, and a former hacker for the NSA and U.S. Marine Corps told Fox News. “Any time you have a state actor engaged in industrial sabotage, that is a real cause for concern. When you attack a critical service like water, power, hospitals, or transportation, you are essentially putting lives at risk.” cyber fight

Last month, Iran fired the first shot by purporting to cyberattack water installations – including tanks, pumps, and pipelines in Israel – raising the alarm among national security and cyber experts over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. cyber fight

While some slight damage to water valves and control systems did take place, according to Haaretz, ultimately there was no persistent damage to the water supply as the hackers had likely intended.

And then on May 9, the Bandar Abbas port terminal in the south of Iran was suddenly crippled, and shipping traffic was suspended for days. Israel was behind the retaliatory strike back which successfully inflicted severe damage without causing casualties, the Washington Post reported this week.

Israeli Water Authority officials reportedly detected the attempt and immediately changed system passwords and took measures to secure their systems.

“It is definitely unusual to see a state actor targeting the critical infrastructure assets of another state. That type of activity is usually reserved for war or near-war situations, at least by most countries,” Kennedy surmised. “Iran doesn’t respect those rules.”

Exclusive: In veiled warning to Iran, U.S. tells Gulf mariners to stay clear of its warships

In an alert that appeared aimed squarely at Iran, the U.S. Navy issued a warning on Tuesday to mariners in the Gulf to stay 100 meters (yards) away from U.S. warships or risk being “interpreted as a threat and subject to lawful defensive measures.”

The notice to mariners, which was first reported by Reuters, follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat last month to fire on any Iranian ships that harass Navy vessels.

“Armed vessels approaching within 100 meters of a U.S. naval vessel may be interpreted as a threat,” according to the text of the notice, which can be seen here. (bit.ly/36msOL2)

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new notice to mariners was not a change in the U.S. military’s rules of engagement.

The Pentagon has stated that Trump’s threat was meant to underscore the Navy’s right to self-defense.

The Bahrain-based U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said in a statement that its notice was “designed to enhance safety, minimize ambiguity and reduce the risk of miscalculation.”

It follows an incident last month in which 11 Iranian vessels came close to U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships in the Gulf, in what the U.S. military called “dangerous and provocative” behavior.

At one point, the Iranian vessels came within 10 yards (9 meters) of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Maui, the U.S. military said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) aided by the country’s intelligence forces thwarted an attack by a terrorist team in Kordestan province in Western Iran.
“The joint operation against an 8-member terrorist group was launched on Tuesday in Marivan general district and two of the terrorists were killed,” IRGC announced in a statement on Tuesday night.
According to the statement, four of the terrorists were also wounded while the remaining two managed to escape using the darkness of the night. On May 5, three members of Islamic Revolution guards corps’ forces were martyred in a clash with counter-revolutionary terrorists in the general district of Divandere.
A number of anti-revolutionary terrorists were also killed in that clash. Iran’s Western borders have been the scene of occasional terrorist groups’ attacks.
In a relevant development in early May, Iranian security forces dismantled two terrorist groups at the bordering areas of the two Western provinces of West Azarbaijan and Kurdistan.
The intelligence ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday that its forces in West Azarbaijan and Kurdistan provinces have managed to monitor and eliminate two terrorist groups, affiliated with separatist groups, that had entered the country from neighboring countries to carry out acts of terrorism.
During the effective intelligence operation, 16 terrorists were arrested and their two AK47 weapons and a bunch of grenades and live ammunition were seized, it added.

Judiciary Chief: Iran Seriously Pursuing General Soleimani Assassination Case
Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Rayeesi once again denounced the assassination of former Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander Martyr Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani by the terrorist army of the US, and reassured that Washington will be held to account for the crime.

“The judicial and legal process to pursue Hajj Qassem Soleimani assassination case has started in the Judiciary and an interrogator and a judge have been assigned to file the case and investigate different aspects of martyr Soleimani’s assassination,” Rayeesi said.

He noted that accomplishment of the case is seriously being pursued by the Judiciary, expressing the hope that people and lovers of General Soleimani would soon be informed of the results.

Rayeesi reminded that in addition to pursuing the case at international tribunals, the judiciary will also pursued the case through national courts as the Iranian parliament has authorized the Judiciary to file a lawsuit against the US with internal courts whenever the American government adopts any illegal and aggressive measure against Iranian nationals.

Lieutenant General Soleimani and Deputy Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were assassinated in a US drone strike on Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on January 3.

Iranian Officials Say Minimal Damage At Ancient Jewish Site After Allegations Of Arson Attack

Iranian officials say a revered ancient Jewish site in the west central province of Hamedan, where the biblical queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai are believed to have been buried, has sustained minimal damage following a fire reported over the weekend.

The cause of the incident on May 15, which U.S. based Jewish groups have condemned as an “anti-Semitic” attack, is still not clear.

Authorities have said that the incident is being investigated.

Speaking on May 17 as he visited the site, the head of Tehran’s Jewish community Homayoun Somayeh said that the shrine of Esther and Mordechai is “completely intact,” adding that the incident has been “magnified and exaggerated” by the enemies of the Islamic republic.

“Religious minorities, especially Jews, live in this country under the shadow of the Islamic Republic and all-round support from the government, and are grateful for the services of the government and the system,” he was quoted as saying by the semiofficial Mehr news agency.

Ali Malmir, head of Hamedan’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism department, also said that no damage has been inflicted on the main tomb of Esther and Mordechai by a “limited fire” in a nearby building which was immediately extinguished.

He also said that some of the wires and a carpet in the side building were burned, while adding that the restoration of the site will start this week. He said that the cause of the fire will be announced as soon as determined.

On April 14, in front of the Iranian Majles (parliament), Adel Azam, the chairman of Iran’s Court of Accounts, accused his government of corruption, mismanagement and the pilfering of state funds. pandemic

He did so in his annual budget report, which he titled “Summary of Budget Fraud in 1397 (2018).” Budget reports are mandated, but they are not generally damning and accusatory, nor read before the Majles. pandemic

The Budget Fraud Report of 1397 is incomplete. It carefully does not explicitly accuse Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), or the security establishment of impropriety. pandemic

Rather, it does so implicitly by exposing the scope of corruption in the current government, by pointing out illegal salaries and subsidies to government debtors and contractors, and by identifying sectors of the economy that are known to be IRGC-controlled.

IranWire wrote a series of articles detailing various aspects of the report to further shine a light on its mentions of currency manipulation, astronomical costs of small development projects, misappropriation of funds, and more.

In these reports, it brings up the important question of why the report was intended to draw public ire; i.e., why would the government accuse itself of money laundering and corruption?

In short, the answer is that factions in the government loyal to President Hassan Rouhani and his administration prepared the report to blame Khamenei and the IRGC for sabotaging Rouhani’s efforts to fix Iran’s economic troubles.

In fact, the IRGC, with Khamenei’s blessing, has become quite brazen in its efforts to pilfer Iran’s treasury, as well as to undermine Rouhani’s efforts to curb such corruption.

Rouhani versus the IRGC

Rouhani has faced significant opposition from hard-liners over the course of his tenure. The IRGC has been outspoken in its criticism of such policies as easing tensions with the West in the hopes of opening Iran’s economy to foreign investment and cooperation.

The Iranian navy last week announced that 19 sailors had been killed and 15 wounded in a “friendly fire” incident, when its support vessel Konarak was hit by a new anti-ship missile being tested by the Jamaran frigate during drills in the Gulf of Oman.

Iranian state TV said the incident took place off Bandar-e-Jask in southern Iran after the Konarak had towed a practice target to its destination but failed to move far enough away.

It is noteworthy that the Iranian leadership has remained silent about the number of fatalities and the reasons for the incident.

It has not released video footage to indicate how the fatal mistake happened, even though Iran usually documents its naval drills exhaustively, raising further suspicions about the reality of the incident.

A few months before this, in January of this year, Iranian forces shot down a Ukrainian jetliner shortly after it took off from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board.

In the three days following this incident, regime officials repeatedly denied any involvement, claiming that human error by the pilots or aviation personnel might have caused the plane to crash.

As evidence of the regime’s culpability mounted, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that a missile had been fired mistakenly and hit the plane.

Video footage of the incident recorded by Iranian citizens and subsequently uploaded to social media demonstrated, however, that the plane had been hit by two missiles, rather than one, prompting the regime to admit that it had shot down the airliner.

Regime officials refused to hand over the black boxes from the destroyed plane.

After the Ukrainian jetliner was downed, the media in Iran blamed a lack of coordination between Iran’s air defense forces and the airport’s command center.

However, the media was not brave enough to put the regime in the dock and hold it accountable for the incident.

Tactical Change Or Withdrawal? Iran’s Syria Strategy Amid Reports Of Force Reductions – Analysis

Some nine years after Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) deployed military advisers and fighters to Syria to prop up the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, Israeli and U.S. officials have said Tehran is reducing its presence in Syria.

Analysts told RFE/RL that amid the reports of a movement of forces, there are no indications Iran is changing its regional strategy, which is driven by political, ideological, and security interests.

Israeli military officials said recently that Tehran has pulled some of its forces from Syria and evacuated military bases near the border with Israel due to an increase in Israeli air strikes on Iranian targets.

Israel does not discuss its military operations but officials have vowed to maintain pressure on Iran with Defense Minister Naftali Bennett saying on May 5 that “Iran has nothing to do in Syria…[and] we won’t stop before they leave Syria.”

Speaking earlier this week at a virtual event, U.S. special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey said Tehran has been scaling back its presence in Syria, which he linked to tough U.S. sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy.

Lack Of Cash

The coronavirus pandemic has also hit the Islamic republic hard — officially infecting more than 116,000 people and killed nearly 7,000 — and record-low oil prices have added to Iran’s economic challenges.

On the military front, the January 3 assassination by the U.S. military of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani — who led the regional activities of the powerful IRGC — has dealt a heavy blow to the Islamic republic.

“We do see some withdrawal of Iranian-commanded forces. Some of that is tactical because they are not fighting right now, but it also is a lack of money,” said Jeffrey at a May 12 panel hosted by the Washington-based Hudson Institute.

But analysts say there are no signs Iran is quitting Syria, the only Arab country that sided with the Islamic republic during the 1980-1988 war with Iraq.
