Regime banned reporters & shut down Internet to block news of protests

March 5, 2011

The Islamic Republic of Iran banned foreign reporters from covering the March 1 protests, and now the Iran Channel has learned that the regime has practically shut down the Internet for the past two days.

As a result, the world has not seen much at all of the first weekly protest called to demand the release of abducted Green Movement leaders.

A senior Iranian media figure told IranChannel.org that Iran’s Internet “was just about turned off” for most of March 1 and 2.

Although activists have been able to communicate with one another through email and Skype, and send cell phone videos of police action to bloggers and websites in the outside world, most Internet traffic has slowed to a trickle.

This helps explain why so many quality photos and videos of the massive 2009 protests can be seen, yet relatively few such images of the 2011 demonstrations are available.

Since the February 14 house arrests and subsequent abductions of Green Movement reform leaders, control of the protest movement has gone to more radical activists who network over the Internet.

59 political prisoners launch indefinite hunger strike in protest to repressive policies

March 4, 2011

The Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners59 political prisoners in Rajai Shahr ‘Gohardasht’ prison released a statement announcing that they have launched an indefinite hunger strike since Tuesday morning. The hunger strike is in protest to the suppression of the Iranian people’s righteous resistance and against the limitations imposed inside the prison.

According to The Student Committee in Defense of Political Prisoners (SCDPP), the message of the political prisoners was delivered to the organization with great difficulty. In the message, the prisoners cited the following reasons for launching the indefinite hunger strike: the widespread crackdowns on political prisoners; the great limitations inside the prison; the severance of all contacts between prisoners and their families; the mistreatment, insults and disrespectful behaviour toward the prisoners; the brutal repression of the Iranian people’s resistance; and the arrest of the [opposition] political leaders.

Based on the received information, the political prisoners in ward 4, the newly established special security hall of Rajai Shahr prison, are under strict control of the security organizations. All contacts between prisoners are severely repressed.

The recent limitations imposed in this ward are intended to put additional pressure on the exiled prisoners of conscience. Some of these restrictions include, beatings and physical assault, limitations on in-person visits, complete severance of phone contacts, threats of secret executions, threats of transfer to solitary confinement, refusal to provide adequate and proper medical attention, and threats of rape. It appears that prison officials, particularly Nabiollah Farajinejad, the deputy security head of the prison, are applying these restrictions in complete coordination with judicial and security officials.

Nabiollah Faraji is a former interrogator and torturer at Evin prison. He is supported by Ali Haj-Kazem, the director of Rajai Shahr prison, as well as judicial and security authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He is assigned the responsibility of putting pressure on political prisoners held in the special security section. Additionally, he has several unresolved case files in connection to the torture of prisoners.

US discusses Iran sanctions with Venezuela

March 4, 2011

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2011 (AFP) – US officials have “discussed” concerns that Venezuela may be breaching international sanctions on Iran, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Thursday.

“We have had discussions with Venezuela regarding the Iran Sanctions Act,” Crowley told reporters in referring to the US laws that places economic sanctions on firms doing business with Iran.

Washington is closely examining whether Venezuela’s cooperation with the Islamic republic on energy issues violates international sanctions on the Tehran regime over its nuclear program, which Western powers fear is a cover to build nuclear weapons.

The scrutiny comes after Venezuela and Iran, two major oil producers and longtime US foes, signed 11 deals in Tehran focused on energy cooperation in October.

US diplomats have had “broad conversations internationally with countries… who might have companies or entities that do business with Iran,” Crowley said.

“And we have lots of conversations to ensure that countries and companies are in full compliance” with both international and also national sanctions, he added.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a congressional panel Tuesday that the United States will take action if Venezuela violates international sanctions against Iran.

But the top US diplomat also acknowledged there was no evidence so far that leftist Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez had violated any such sanctions
