Nigeria Threatens to Report Iran to UN Over Arms Shipment

0

November 13, 2010

Nigerian officials say they will report Iran to the U.N. Security Council if they find evidence that an illegal arms shipment allegedly originating in Iran broke international law and U.N. sanctions.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia issued the threat Friday.

He met in Abuja late Thursday with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to discuss the arms shipment.

Ajumogobia said Mottaki authorized Nigerian officials to interview one of two Iranians implicated in the arms shipment.

The cache of weapons was seized by Nigeria’s secret service two weeks ago in Lagos and found to contain rockets, rifle rounds, grenades and other explosives.

Israeli officials have said the weapons were bound for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.  A Hamas leader in Gaza denied the weapons were headed to Gaza.

Nigeria has been on alert since a bombing near an October 1 Independence Day celebration killed 12 people.

A Nigerian militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iran arms-smuggling case roils Nigeria

Abuja : Nigeria | Nov 12, 2010

Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria will take actions against Iran if an investigation shows it violated international law and U.N. sanctions in an arms smuggling case, Nigeria’s foreign minister said Friday.

The artillery rockets and other weapons, loaded in 13 shipping containers that were labeled as building supplies, were seized on Oct. 26 at a port in Lagos, Nigeria. Nigeria’s security service believes the arms were imported by some local politicians to destabilize the country if they lose in upcoming elections that are expected to be hotly contested.

An international cargo shipper based in France has said one of its ships picked up the containers from Bandar Abbas, a port in southern Iran.

“The consignment did originate from Iran,” Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia told a news conference Friday “That has been confirmed from our own shipping documents and the Iranian authorities have also confirmed that the consignment did originate from Iran.”

Underscoring the sensitivity of the matter, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met with his Nigerian counterpart here late Thursday.

Ajumogobia said that as a result of his “very productive meeting” with Mottaki, the Iranian official authorized Nigerian officials to interview one of two Iranians implicated in the arms case. But Ajumogobia said the other man has diplomatic immunity.

Nigerian authorities believe both men are hiding in the Iranian Embassy, located down a quiet street in Abuja, the capital, and which is being watched by Nigerian security officials.

“If Nigeria finds at the conclusion of the investigation that there has been a breach of international law, a breach of U.N. sanctions, Nigeria is a member of the U.N. Security Council (and) we will do what is necessary,” Ajumogobia told reporters.

In a 2007 resolution stepping up sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, the U.N. Security Council banned Iranian arms exports, forbidding the sale or supply of weapons by Iran, whether directly or indirectly. It requires nations to prevent any such transfers and prevent their citizens from obtaining any weapons from Iran.

Mottaki’s visit came after Nigerian authorities had concluded that Iran’s government was behind the arms shipment, according to internal Nigerian government documents seen Thursday by The Associated Press.

The Nigerian foreign minister said Mottaki cleared the way for Nigerian security officials to interview Azimi Agajany, one of the men who Nigeria says organized the secret arms shipment through a Tehran-based company called International Trading and General Construction. Ajumogobia said Agajany may be questions as early as Friday.

The internal government reports seen by AP say Agajany received a visa to travel to Nigeria after getting an endorsement from Sheikh Ali Abbas Othman, also known as Abbas Jega, a Nigerian who worked for Radio Tehran’s Hausa language service and studied in Iran. Jega is in the custody of Nigeria’s State Security Service, a Nigerian government official told the AP.

The other Iranian implicated in the case, Sayed Akbar Tahmaesebi, entered Nigeria after Nigerian authorities received a letter of recommendation from Iran’s foreign ministry saying he would “provide administrative support” at its Abuja embassy, according to the internal Nigerian reports.

Tahmaesebi has diplomatic immunity and cannot be questioned without Iran’s consent, Ajumogobia said.

“If the Iranians are willing to waive immunity then we will pursue that, but in the meantime we are taking one step at a time,” the Nigerian foreign minister told journalists.

Inside the cargo containers at Nigeria’s main port in Lagos, inspectors found 107mm artillery rockets, rifle rounds and arms. The rockets can accurately hit targets more than 5 miles (8.5 kilometers) away with a 40-foot (12-meter) killing radius. Insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq have used similar rockets against U.S. troops. China, the United States, and Russia manufacture versions of the rocket, as does Iran.

Displaying a lack of knowledge about Nigeria’s geography, Agajany initially wanted the consignments shipped to Abuja, the documents said…Targeted killings allegedly committed by a radical Islamic sect have been shaking the north while militants have launched attacks in the oil-rich southern delta. Presidential elections are scheduled for next year in Africa’s most populous country that embraced democracy only a decade ago after a string of military dictatorships and coups.

Iran Creating Fiction About Postelection Unrest, Neda’s Death

0

November 12, 2010

Iran has reportedly started producing a movie about the postelection events in which a well-known Iranian actress plays the role of Neda Agha Soltan, who was killed during last year’s protests over the reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The “Café Cinema” website reports that the movie, titled “Thesis,” is about a university professor who is involved in “espionage activities and contact with foreigners” and four students who are writing their thesis with him. The thesis, the website says, turns into an excuse for the students to enter the world of politics.

According to “Cafe Cinema,” actress Leyla Otadi plays the role of Neda Agha Soltan in the movie, which is being directed by Hamed Kolahdari.

Kolahdari is quoted as saying that “Thesis” will be a positive achievement for both the people of Iran and the country’s establishment.

Iran has already produced two documentaries about the death of Neda Agha Soltan. In the first, Neda is portrayed as a foreign agent who staged her own death.

The second, which that was aired on the anniversary of the 2009 election, suggested that an Iranian opposition group based outside the country was behind the murder of Neda.

Neda became one of the symbol’s of the Green opposition movement after an amateur video of her last moments was posted on YouTube and watched by millions around the world.

Neda’s mother, Hajar Rostami, told “The Guardian” in June: “Although Neda has been murdered and is dead, they are still afraid of her, they come to the graveyard and want to kill her again. She’s dead but her memory is getting brighter and brighter every day.”

Rights groups have called on Iran to allow an independent investigation into the killing of Neda and other deaths and human rights abuses that took place during the postelection unrest. Authorities have ignored the calls.

Iranian hardliner opposes release of political prisoners

0

November 12, 2010

Iranian hardliner, Ayatollah Jannati told worshippers in today’s Mass Prayers in Tehran that political prisoners should not be given bail.

Iranian news agencies report that the head of Iran’s Guardian Council said in his sermon today: “Giving furloughs to prisoners is not a bad thing but not to someone who gets leave and then begins further conspiracies or flees the country.”

He added that many use these opportunities to leave the country and others who stay inside the country, begin organizing meetings and “conspiring” against the regime.

He stressed that prisoners “who were involved in the sedition against the Islamic regime and were convicted of this crime should not receive furloughs and continue with their conspiracies.”

Iranian hardliners insist that the disputes against the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the allegations of fraud in the 2009 presidential elections are part of a seditious plan to topple the Islamic Republic.

The opposition however insists that their protests against the irregularities in the elections are legitimate and that their demands, far from being seditious, are within the framework of the Islamic Republic constitution.

The government has however arrested scores of reformist figures and social activists which are reportedly receiving harsh treatments in prison.

Anger At Actress Who Is Due To Play Role Of Neda

0

November 12, 2010

Members of Iran’s opposition movement have been quick to react to the news that a movie is being filmed in Iran about the postelection unrest and the violent death of Neda Agha Soltan.

They have been targeting Leyla Otadi, the actress who is due to play the role of Neda. Otadi’s website was hacked and a bloody picture of Neda was posted on her site.

A Facebook group called “Those Opposed To Leyla Otadi” has already attracted more than 7,000 people as fans. The page says the Iranian government is trying to cover up Neda’s death by creating a film that suggests her death was part of a scenario executed by the CIA.

Bloggers have also been criticizing Otadi for accepting the role of Neda and working with “the murderers of Iranian citizens” and of ignoring “the blood that was spilled” last year during the postelection crackdown.

UPDATE: Iran’s Fars news agency, which is said to be close to the Revolutionary Guard, reported today that Otadi’s role has nothing to do with Neda Agha Soltan and that the movie she’s set to play in is a crime movie that does not explore the postelection unrest. Fars says another actress is due to play Neda in another movie that has received authorization from the authorities.

Otadi herself has not yet reacted to the controversy.

Persian Report by RAHANA
Translation by Siavash Sartipi, Persian2English

The mother of student activist Arash Sadeghi suffered a heart attack after Intelligence agents stormed into her home at 4:00am. She died four days later in the hospital. The incident occurred just days after Sadeghi was released from prison on a temporary leave. Sadeghi had not been re-summoned to court nor did he receive a telephone call from the judicial authorities.

Sadeghi was arrested after the disputed 2009 Iranian Presidential election and spent a year and a half in prison before he was granted prison leave. During prison interrogations, Sadeghi’s shoulder was dislocated twice and he received a broken tooth. He was sentenced to six years in prison and a three-year suspended prison term was also added on after his trial in court.

Arash Sadeghi is a Master’s philosophy student at Allameh Tabatabai University and a member of the Islamic Participation Front of the same university.

Nourizad rails against “monstrous” treatment by intelligence officials

0

Publish date: November 11

Detained Iranian journalist and filmmaker, Mohammad Nourizad denounces Iranian government’s torture of political prisoners.

In the most recent report on Nourizad’s personal website, it is reported that in his trial last Saturday, Nourizad has responded to the charge of insulting intelligence officials saying: “During my arrest, intelligence officials have beaten me and insulted my honour and family.”

He has told the court that beatings and “monstrous” acts such as “pressing down the detainee’s heads in the toilet bowl” have been regular treatments for him and other political detainees such as Mostafa Tajzadeh, Abdollah Momeni, Hamzeh Karami and many others.

After the controversial 2009 presidential elections in Iran when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory was challenged by the reformists and millions of people on the streets, the government arrested numerous members of the reformist organizations, women’s and human rights activist as well as journalists and protesting citizens.

Scores of detained political prisoners have reported use of torture as a common procedure used by the Islamic Republic interrogators.

Nourizad also reports that the judge has told him that all the charges against him have been proven. He thus accuses the ministry of intelligence officials of exerting complete control over the country’s judges and pressing them into following their decisions.

In the past year, Iranian opposition has repeatedly decried the interference of the ministry of intelligence in the responsibilities of the judiciary and activists maintain that the Islamic Republic judiciary has completely lost its independence.
