British-Iranian dual national flees Iran on foot over mountains

A British-Iranian academic has fled Iran on foot through the country’s mountains after he was convicted of collaboration with the UK government.

Kameel Ahmady, who went to Britain to study social sciences, was sentenced to nine years in prison in Iran in December. An appeal against his conviction was rejected in absentia.

While in the UK, Ahmady applied for British citizenship. He then returned to Iran to pursue his career in anthropology, focusing on the rights of young women and girls, especially over forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

In Iran he campaigned against both, including calling for the legal age of marriage for girls, currently 13, to be raised.

This brought him to the attention of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which arrested him in August 2019.

US Special Services Accuse Iran of Planning Attack on UAE Embassy in Ethiopia – Reports

US intelligence have accused Iran of being behind terrorist plots against the embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Ethiopia, The New York Times reports.

Rear Adm. Heidi K. Berg, director of intelligence at the Pentagon’s Africa Command, said that Iran was behind the 15 people recently arrested in Ethiopia, which said that they were planning a major attack in Addis Adaba, against the UAE embassy there.

Berg said as quoted by The New York Times on Monday that the “mastermind of this foiled plot,” Ahmed Ismail, had been arrested in Sweden.

According to the newspaper, US and Israeli officials are accusing Iran of being behind the planned attack on the UAE embassy and believe that Iran has also been gathering intelligence on the US and Israeli embassies in Ethiopia, with the aim of finding “soft targets” in African countries. In doing so, Tehran could allegedly take “avenge” for the painful deaths of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh and top IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US targeted attack in Baghdad on January 3, 2020. Iran has denied all allegations.

IRGC Spokesman Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif warned Israel that it will certainly be responded for its mischiefs and terrorist acts against the Iranian scientists and people.

“Certainly, the usurper and fake Zionist regime will receive the response to its mischief,” General Sharif said on Monday, referring to Israel’s assassination of the Iranian scientists and people.

He said that the enemy’s all-out confrontation against the Islamic Republic is indicative of Iran’s strong power and recent incidents have shown that the western power has lost power and the US has no more the ability to impose hegemony on others.

Iranian nuclear scientists have been the target of the western and Israeli spy agencies’ assassination attempts in recent years.

In June 2012, Iran announced that its intelligence forces had identified and arrested all terrorist elements behind the assassination of the country’s nuclear scientists.

“All the elements involved in the assassinations of the country’s nuclear scientists have been identified and arrested,” Iran’s Intelligence Ministry announced in a statement.

“A number of countries, whose territories and facilities had been misused by the Mossad-backed terrorist teams, have provided the Iranian officials with relevant information,” the statement added.

“Over the course of the investigations, all other elements behind the assassinations of the Iranian scientists Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, Majid Shahriari, and Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan as well as Reza Qashqai (Roshan’s driver) have been apprehended,” the statement read.

“Some of the perpetrators of the assassination of Dr. Fereidoun Abbasi, the current head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, are among those arrested,” the ministry added.

According to the statement, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry had detected some of Mossad’s bases within the territories of one of Iran’s Western neighbors, which provided training and logistical support to the terrorist networks.

When Ethiopia’s intelligence agency recently uncovered a cell of 15 people it said were casing the embassy of the United Arab Emirates, along with a cache of weapons and explosives, it claimed to have foiled a major attack with the potential to sow havoc in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

But the Ethiopians omitted a key detail about the purported plot: who was behind it.

The only clue was the arrest of a 16th person: Accused of being the ringleader, Ahmed Ismail had been picked up in Sweden with the cooperation of friendly “African, Asian and European intelligence services,” the Ethiopians said.

Now American and Israeli officials say the operation was the work of Iran, whose intelligence service activated a sleeper cell in Addis Ababa last fall with orders to gather intelligence also on the embassies of the United States and Israel.

Exclusive: Iranian diplomats instigated killing of dissident in Istanbul, Turkish officials say

Two intelligence officers at Iran’s consulate in Turkey instigated the killing last November of an Iranian dissident in Istanbul who criticized the Islamic Republic’s political and military leaders, two senior Turkish officials told Reuters.

The accusation is likely to strain ties between Turkey and Iran, two regional powers which had grown closer under the government of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Masoud Molavi Vardanjani was shot dead on an Istanbul street on Nov. 14, 2019, a little over a year after the Turkish officials say he left Iran.

A police report into the killing, published two weeks ago, said Vardanjani had an “unusual profile”. It said he worked in cyber security at Iran’s defense ministry and had become a vocal critic of the Iranian authorities.

In Tehran, families of downed Flight PS752 demand arrest of Revolutionary Guard leader

Relatives of the victims of downed Flight PS752, which crashed in Iran last year, held a protest in Tehran over the weekend demanding justice for their loved ones and the arrest of the leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Iran’s leaders have admitted shot down the plane.

The demonstration came days after Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif denied the existence of an audio recording, obtained by CBC, in which he is said to be discussing the possibility that the destruction of Flight PS752 was an intentional act.

In the recording, the individual, who was identified by sources as Zarif, is heard saying there are a “thousand possibilities” to explain the downing of the jet, including a deliberate attack involving two or three “infiltrators” — a scenario he said was “not at all unlikely.”

Tehran is using UN containers to conceal weapons stockpiles at the Damascus International Airport, according to a report in the Voice of Damascus, a news site aligned with Syrian rebel fighters.

According to a source employed at private company, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have set up a dummy container terminal adjacent to the airport. Containers at the site bear the names of the UN and international shipping company DHL.

The Iranians are using the new terminal as a temporary distribution center for storing weapons, in particular missiles and missile parts, prior to their distribution throughout Syria. According to the source, the terminal is situated just 200 meters (yards) from the airport, which was targeted by Israel in the past for its use by the Revolutionary Guards to arm Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian militias and Hezbollah.

The facility is guarded by members of the Revolutionary Guards, according to the report, and airport workers are prevented from getting near the site. The terminal holds over 25 containers formerly used by the UN.

IAEA: Iran has started producing uranium metal

The United Nations’ atomic watchdog agency said Wednesday its inspectors have confirmed that Iran has begun the production of uranium metal — another violation of the 2015 landmark nuclear deal with world powers.

International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi told member nations that his inspectors had confirmed Feb. 8 that a small amount of uranium metal, 3.6 grams, had been produced at Iran’s Isfahan plant, the Vienna-based organization said.

Uranium metal can also be used for a nuclear bomb and research on its production is specifically prohibited under the nuclear deal — the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — that Tehran signed with Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia and the United States in 2015.

Iran had previously announced the move, saying its plans to conduct research and development on uranium metal production were part of its “declared aim to design an improved type of fuel,” according to the IAEA.
