South Korea eases virus curbs in the Seoul region

South Korea will temporarily ease coronavirus curbs in the greater Seoul area after a decline in cases.

The country largely overcame an early Covid-19 surge with extensive tracing and testing but has battled several spikes in recent weeks raising concerns of the second wave of infections.

The new cases – mainly in the greater Seoul region, home to half the country’s 52 million population – prompted authorities to tighten social distancing measures last month.

But the measures on the metropolitan area will be eased starting Monday for two weeks, South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-Kyun told a government meeting, as new local cases declined.

South Korea has seen triple-digit increases since August 14 with more than 120 new cases reported Sunday, after several weeks with numbers generally in the 30s and 40s.

Iran media celebrates ‘increased attacks’ on US in Iraq

On September 10, a katyusha rocket was reportedly fired at a US facility in Baghdad’s airport.

On September 8, an explosive device targeted a convoy that supplies US soldiers in Iraq, according to local Iraqi authorities.

On September 7, another attack targeted Camp Taji, base US forces recently left.

On September 6, three rockets targeted the airport.

There were also attacks on September 5, September 3, and September 2.

Iran’s Fars News is now celebrating these increased attacks by highlighting the US Central Command’s recent statements on them.

“Attacks on our forces have increased,” Fars News quotes the US commander as saying.

Iran calls the US forces “terrorist cells” and calls the attacks the work of “resistance.”

This is a reverse of the US language which tends to view the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group and calls the attacks “rogue militias.” celebrates

The US has said that either the attacks are ordered by Iran or use Iranian weapons, according to Fars News.

The news report doesn’t try to downplay this accusation, instead noting that the US escalated the situation in Iraq by killing Iranian IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani in January. Reading the article, it clearly indicates that Iran is messaging about its role. It highlights comments by US Central Command head Kenneth McKenzie and notes that “Iran’s goal is to force the United States to leave the region.”By highlighting the US statements, without any kind of pushback, it appears to be giving them credence and basically taking responsibility for what Iran must see as a successful harassment campaign on US forces. Washington is drawing down soldiers in Iraq from 5,200 to around 3,000. It has transferred eight facilities as posts and bases to Iraq.

Navid Afkari, a wrestler from Shiraz arrested during protests in August 2018, has been executed in Iran.

Akari was handed down two death sentences: one for the alleged murder of a Shiraz intelligence agency official, and a second for moharebeh, or “waging war on God,” for taking part in protests.

The murder charge was believed to be fabricated, not least because it was based on forced confessions, and there was insufficient evidence that Afkari had even participated in the demonstrations.

The execution was carried out on the morning of September 12, despite the family of the man who was killed, Hassan Torkaman, agreeing to pardon him. Authorities carried out the execution before the Torkaman and Afkari families were able to meet.

Under sharia and Iranian law, if the family of a murder victim agrees to forgive and pardon his or her alleged killer, the death sentence can be commuted and replaced with a lesser sentence.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh reacted to a report by the United Nations Human Rights Council on the situation in Yemen and said putting Iran’s name along with the providers of weapons for the Saudi Coalition is an absolutely incorrect act.

Though Iran has been named only once in the report, it neglects Iran’s pivotal role and unconditional help to politically solve the crisis in Yemen, Khatibzadeh said on Thursday evening.

He added this is while Western countries, like the US and Canada, are openly selling weapons to the Saudi coalition, noting that the figures on these sales have been published and are at hand.

Though these countries, under pressure from human rights organizations, reduced or stopped selling arms to the Saudis, the bitter fact is that they are making handsome amounts through neglecting international and ethical commitments, he said.

The spokesman noted that they are completely alert that the weapons they sell are used to kill Yemeni people and to destroy their infrastructures as a result of which the biggest human tragedy is happening in Yemen by the Saudi coalition and their weapon providers.Saying that it is surprising to see Iran’s name in the report while some Western countries are making billions of dollars through selling weapons to the Saudi coalition, Khatibzadeh highlighted that Iran condemned the Saudi attack on Yemen from the very beginning and supported a political solution to the crisis, especially those carried out in Kuwait, Stockholm, and, recently, the efforts made by the UN chief representative for Yemen Martin Griffiths. Referring to the fact that the name of the Saudi’s has been mentioned tens of times in the report and their destructive role has been underlined.

Anyone familiar with the basics of international law knows that a Canadian court has no authority to deal with what happened outside its jurisdiction.

It is obvious that the Iranian Foreign Ministry has not and will not receive such a complaint.”Regardless of whether this published report is true or not, everyone who is aware of the provisions of international law knows that a Canadian court has no authority over what happened outside its jurisdiction.”“This case is being pursued carefully and seriously at the same time in two directions of talks with the Ukrainian government and judicial proceedings inside Iran,” Khatibzadeh added. As to the Ukrainian government, this issue has been negotiated within the framework of international treaties and conventions accepted by the Islamic Republic of Iran, he said, adding, “A delegation from Ukraine will soon come to Iran to continue these negotiations” This case is being investigated by a competent and authorized court in the Islamic Republic of Iran and it is obvious that any person, whether a legal or real entity, can file a complaint with it, he continued. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Khatibzadeh emphasized, If the Canadian government really wants to help the bereaved families of the incident, it must stop these shows which bear special political motivation.”

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that if he is re-elected in the November elections, Iran will ink a deal with him in the first month and Palestine will get back into the fold as he asserted that his second term will bring in lasting peace in the Middle East.

Next week, Trump will host delegations from Israel and the United Arab Emirates for a signing ceremony of the historic peace deal between the two countries that establish diplomatic ties among them. Encouraged by the Israel-UAE peace deal, countries in the region are lining up that want to go into it, he said.

“As you know, UAE is headed by a very, very highly respected gentleman and respected by everybody. And he’s a warrior too. He’s a great warrior. And Mohammed is very excited about this. And you’ll be hearing other countries coming in over a relatively short period of time, he said.

And you’ll have them come in,” he added.Trump said that two things are going to happen if he wins the elections in November.”If we win the election, Iran will come and sign a deal with us very, very rapidly, within the first week, but let’s give ourselves a month — because their GDP went down 25 percent, which is, like, an unheard-of number, and they’d like to be able to get back to having a successful country again.

Iran’s armed forces on Thursday began a large-scale military exercise in the southern waters of the country amid an unprecedented escalation of tensions with the US.

The three-day military drill, dubbed Zulfiqar-99, involves Iran’s army, navy, air force, and air defense force and many newly developed weapons.

The massive drill is being conducted over 2 million square kilometers (772,204 square miles) territory covering eastern waters of the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, the Makran coast, and the northern Indian Ocean with the theme “sustainable security under deterrent power.”

The drill kicked off Thursday morning with surface and subsurface vessels, air and naval flights, radar and missile systems under the command of Zulfiqar Army Base, sources said.

The objective of the drill is to test the country’s offensive and defensive tactical plans to safeguard Iran’s territorial waters amid heightened tensions in the region. Many incidents have been reported in the Persian Gulf region involving vessels of Iran and US in recent months, at times coming dangerously close to confrontation. The two countries have regularly exchanged barbs since May 2018 when US President Donald Trump announced withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and reinstated sanctions.Over the two years, Iran’s military drills have become a regular feature, which experts believe is a “show of power” to its adversaries. The latest drill, according to Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, deputy chief of Iran’s army, is to “boost the military readiness and capability in naval, aerial, ground and air defense fields.”“Security in West Asia and its strategic waterways requires indigenization of security cooperation from all regional countries and preventing foreign presence in regional waters,” Sayyari said, in a veiled reference to the US vessels.

Iran calls on UK to take immediate action to pay a 40-year debt

Iran’s Ministry of Defense in a statement on Thursday said that the UK must take practical measures concerning a 40-year debt to the country.

In reaction to not paying off the debt by the UK, the statement added that the authorities in the UK have refused to pay the debt under various pretexts such as unlawful and cruel sanctions, causing damage to their reputation in the international arena.

While the British Defense Secretary acknowledges the UK’s 40-year debt to Iran to honor international regulations and to ensure Iran’s national rights, London is expected to take practical and immediate steps to make up for the past so that the Iranians’ dissatisfaction with the UK will not continue, it noted.

The debt is based on an independent legal case that has nothing to do with the release of the prisoner and other matters, and the verdicts had been issued years before the case of the imprisoned offenders, it further noted.

With regard to the amount of the debt, the unreal figures published in the media are far from reality, and according to the time of payment, the final figures will be calculated with the corresponding interest, the statement said. This debt is related to the purchase contract of tanks in 1971 signed by the British Ministry of Defense and the Pahlavi regime according to which the UK was supposed to deliver 1,500 tanks and armored vehicles to Iran. The debt, or court award, originated from the non-delivery of contracts to the Iranian ministry of defense of Chieftain tanks dating back to before 1979.The UK refused to complete the contract after the Shah was deposed, even though Iran had paid the money fully in advance.
