“Do I think they may do something? Yes,” Esper told reporters at the Pentagon. “And they will likely regret it. And we are prepared to exercise self defense and we are prepared to deter further bad behavior from these groups, all of which are sponsored and directed and resourced by Iran.”

The U.S., he added, would take “preemptive action” if it learns of a planned attack.

“The game has changed,” Esper said. “We’re prepared to do what is necessary to defend our personnel and our interests and our partners in the region.”

Hundreds of militiamen and their supporters stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday during two days of mass demonstrations, heightening tensions between the U.S. and Tehran. The attack on the embassy was spurred by U.S. airstrikes Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia and were conducted in retaliation for the killing of an American contractor in a missile attack, which the U.S. blamed on the militias.

Several dozen Marines were sent to the embassy to boost security amid the demonstrations, and the U.S. deployed additional troops to the Middle East to strengthen its presence. On Wednesday, the second day of protests at the compound, the militiamen retreated following an appeal from the Iraqi government.

U.S. officials said a group of three ships carrying another 2,000 Marines has canceled a scheduled exercise off in Morocco and will head to the Persian Gulf as part of the reinforcements heading to the region.

General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters the militias have been engaged in a “sustained campaign” against U.S. forces and coalition partners since at least October, which has “increased in tempo and intensity.” The rocket attack that killed the American contractor and wounded others was “designed to inflict damage and kill,” he said.

The United States carried out a strike that killed Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, the Pentagon said Friday.

“The U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

“Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack U.S. diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of U.S. and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more,” the statement read.

Also confirming the attack, Iran Revolutionary Guards said that “Honored supreme commander of Islam Soleimani was martyred in attack by U.S. helicopters,” Iran state media reported.

The strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, or PMF, Iraqi officials said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Soleimani’s assassination would strengthen resistance against the United States and Israel in the region and the world, Iranian state television reported.

“The brutality and stupidity of American terrorist forces in assassinating Commander Soleimani … will undoubtedly make the tree of resistance in the region and the world more prosperous,” Zarif said in a statement.

Zarif also took to twitter earlier and said the assassination was “an extremely dangerous and foolish escalation. The U.S. bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.”

Iran’s top security body will meet on Friday to discuss the “criminal” attack that killed Soleimani, its spokesman was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

Trump threatens Iran after embassy attack, but remains reluctant to get more involved in region

0

President Trump on Tuesday was pulled toward the kind of Middle East tinderbox he has tried to avoid, as he blamed Iran for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq that further damaged U.S. relations with Baghdad and appeared to put Trump’s hopes for diplomacy with Tehran further out of reach.

Hundreds of supporters of an Iranian-backed militia chanted “Death to America” as they breached part of the outer security layer at the vast compound in Baghdad’s protected Green Zone.

U.S. diplomats were barricaded and unharmed inside the $750 million embassy, built as a powerful symbol of U.S. permanence after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that Trump has derided as the worst U.S. foreign policy blunder. But the hulking structure may now serve as a symbol of how difficult it can be to disentangle U.S. interests from Iraq and the region despite the president’s stated desire to get out of “endless wars” and reduce the United States’ footprint in the Middle East.

Trump now faces a situation where the United States and Iran are elbowing for influence in Iraq as U.S. allies Israel and Saudi Arabia, along with some of Trump’s in-house advisers, urge a more forceful confrontation with Tehran over its aggressive tactics across the Middle East — a potentially combustible situation.

The president struck a bellicose tone Tuesday, but it’s unclear what moves he will make next as he feels the tug between taking a tough line with Iran and trying to avoid getting more involved in the region.

“Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat,” Trump tweeted late Tuesday afternoon from Florida where he is spending the holidays at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “Happy new year!”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Warns Iran Not to ‘Drag Us Into’ Iraq Crisis

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz said on Tuesday that the Tehran regime should not try to drag Israel into the crisis surrounding the violent riots outside the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad by a pro-Iran mob.

If it did so, he warned, “We will respond powerfully.”

“From Israel’s perspective,” Katz said, according to Israeli news site Mako, “if Iran tries to drag us into this, beyond demonstrators screaming, ‘Death to Israel,’ we will respond powerfully. I advise Iran not to test our patience.”

“This is a dramatic development,” Katz said of the unrest, adding that Iran had a “mistaken understanding of the essence of the American superpower.”

“When the US decides to react, they do it powerfully,” he asserted. “They’ve proved that historically.”

“Not just the secretary of state, but also President [Donald] Trump said that this attack on the embassy was carried out by Iran and it will be answered,” Katz noted.

Militiamen breach US Embassy in Baghdad; Trump blames Iran

Angered by deadly airstrikes targeting an Iran-backed militia, dozens of Iraqi Shiite militiamen and their supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday, smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area in one of the worst attacks on the embassy in recent memory.

Why is Iran silent on Israel’s attacks?

Israel inflicted several blows on the Iranian regime in 2019, including in the last week, with cruise missiles reportedly launched towards Iranian and Syrian military positions near the latter’s capital, Damascus.attacks

Why is Iran silent on Israel’s attacks?
Why is Iran silent on Israel’s attacks?

In August and November, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck dozens of Iranian targets in Syria, and carried out a series of airstrikes in northern Baghdad a few months ago. According to reports, several Iranians have been killed and wounded in these airstrikes.

The Islamic Republic is known for immediate retaliation, usually resorting to military responses power in such situations. But on these strikes, the regime has remained silent. The only response coming out of Tehran is heightened rhetoric.

Abbas Nilforoushan, the deputy commander of operations of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), threatened in an interview with the Iranian news agency Tasnim: “Israel is not in a position to threaten Iran. Iran has encircled Israel from all four sides. Nothing will be left of Israel.” Another deputy commander, Hossein Salami, called Tel Aviv “vulnerable and bringing itself closer to death.”

This begs the question why Iran has not yet responded militarily to Israel’s airstrikes against its bases and proxies in Syria and Iraq. The main reason lies in the fact that the Iranian authorities are currently fighting for their own survival, as the regime is mired with various problems and has been cornered from every possible direction.

Tehran has not faced so many challenges at once since its establishment in 1979. Domestically speaking, the regime appears to be in a constant state of emergency. For every round of protests that it crushes with brute force, the next one spreads. In the latest demonstration, around 1,500 people were killed by security forces, including, according to Reuters: “At least 17 teenagers and about 400 women, as well as some members of the security forces and police.”

US Hits Iran-Backed Militia Bases in Iraq and Syria Following Deadly Rocket Attack

U.S. forces have launched strikes on five Iranian-backed militia positions in Iraq and Syria Sunday following a series of rocket attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq, including one that killed an American contractor and wounded four U.S. troops.

The “defensive strikes” on facilities of the Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH) facilities were intended to “degrade KH’s ability to conduct future attacks against” the U.S. and coalition forces, Jonathan Hoffman, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, said in a statement.

He said the three KH locations in Iraq and two in Syria that were hit included weapons depots and command and control positions that the militia group had used to plan and execute a series of recent attacks on friendly bases in Iraq.

Hoffman did not describe how the attacks were conducted or what munitions were used, but the U.S. maintains a full array of fixed-wing and rotary attack aircraft in the region, as well as precision missile systems. Citing U.S. officials, CNN reported that F-15 Strike Eagle fighters conducted the strikes.

In the most recent attack on U.S. positions, KH paramilitaries fired more than 30 rockets Friday at a U.S. base near Kirkuk in north-central Iraq, resulting in the death of an American contractor and injuries to four U.S. military personnel and two members of the Iraqi Security Forces, Hoffman said.

Similar attacks led the U.S. to evacuate nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad earlier this year and close the U.S. consulate in Basra.

In his statement, Hoffman noted that the U.S. respects Iraqi sovereignty and the independence of the Baghdad government in exercising control of operations within its territory, but added that the U.S. “will not be deterred from exercising its right of self-defense.”

Hoffman charged that “KH has a strong linkage with Iran’s Quds Force,” a unit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps formed to carry out unconventional warfare, and “has repeatedly received lethal aid and other support from Iran that it has used to attack OIR coalition forces.”
