White House says US communicating with Iran over detained Americans

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday the United States had begun to communicate with Iran over the country’s detention of American citizens, calling the matter a “complete and utter outrage”.

Iran has arrested dozens of dual nationals, including several Americans, in recent years, mostly on espionage charges. Rights activists accuse the country of trying to use the detentions to win concessions from other countries, though Tehran dismisses the charge.

Sullivan told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that it was a “significant priority” of President Joe Biden’s administration to get those Americans “safely back home.”

“We have begun to communicate with the Iranians on this issue,” Sullivan said when asked if the administration had started hostage negotiations with Iran.

Iran executes political activist Javid Dehghan Khald despite human rights groups warnings

Authorities in Iran executed an ethnic Baluchi man on Saturday morning who had been in prison on charges of cooperating with anti-regime groups, Persian daily Iran International reported.

Despite human rights groups warnings, 31-year-old Javid Dehghan Khald was executed in Zahedan prison in Iran after serving five and a half years in prison.

Just a day before the execution was carried out, the United Nations human rights office called on Tehran to halt the hanging of Khald after condemning an alleged spree of 28 executions in Iran, including several prisoners from minority groups.

Amnesty International also called on the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to stop the execution of Khald.

Khald was sentenced to death after being convicted “following a grossly unfair trial” of belonging to an armed group and involvement in an ambush that killed two Revolutionary Guards, Amnesty International said.

State-Sponsored Conspiracy Circus Wrecks Iran’s Own Vaccine Rollout

0

Iran has begun its vaccine rollout with Russia’s Sputnik V, but a labyrinth of government crackdowns, cover-ups, and conspiracy theories have cast a shadow over the nation’s pandemic response.

In the past year, the Iranian government has denied the pandemic’s spread within its borders; falsified official data on pandemic deaths; introduced a dud “coronavirus detector,” and banned the importation of American and British vaccines.

According to government officials, Iran’s vaccine rollout will occur in four phases, starting with a projected vaccination goal of 18 million in medical staff and vulnerable populations by next winter, when general public vaccination begins.

But, as one of the countries hit hardest by the pandemic, much of the damage has already been done.

The Islamic Republic’s reported COVID-19 death toll is nearing 60,000, the highest in the Middle East; its economy, which had already been mired by low global oil prices, mismanagement, corruption, and U.S. sanctions before the pandemic hit, is tanking.

The Islamic Republic’s disastrous response to the pandemic began early last year when officials altogether denied that the virus was spreading in Iran in order to encourage public attendance at several high-profile events, including commemorations of Quds Force military commander Major General Qassem Soleimani, the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Iran’s first pandemic-induced death was recorded in late January, a month before officials had made any acknowledgment of the spread of the virus within the nation, according to a BBC report in August.

Mahan Air, Iran’s largest flight carrier, continued flights to China and elsewhere despite government bans, becoming a symbol of the pandemic’s spread in the Middle East.

A viral video of deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi visibly sick at a press conference, attempting to reassure the public that the pandemic was under control, only to test positive a day later, presented a chilling omen of mistakes and cover-ups to come.

A viral video of deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi visibly sick at a press conference, attempting to reassure the public that the pandemic was under control, only to test positive a day later, presented a chilling omen of mistakes and cover-ups to come.

One of the stranger twists in Iran’s pandemic response was the unveiling of a “COVID-19 detection device” by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC’s top commander, Major General Hossein Salami, claimed that the hand-held device used magnetic waves to instantly detect COVID-19 infections from up to 100 meters away. The widely mocked project dead-ended, but the episode raised serious questions about the aptitude of the top commander, and why no senior officials had rebuked him in public. From the pandemic’s onset, Iran amplified Russian and Chinese disinformation about the plague, with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei floating false claims that the virus was American in origin, and that it was “specifically built for Iran using Iranians’ genetic data.”

These dubious, government-backed efforts stoked a general environment of misinformation spreading on social media, including rumors that targeted officials. Other questionable figures offered their own bizarre “prescriptions” for COVID-19: in a viral video, a self-proclaimed Islamic medicine healer promoted the consumption of camel urine as a way of preventing and curing the virus. In another case, a cleric recommended the anal insertion of cotton wool drenched in violet oil.

Since the beginning of their rule in Iran, the ayatollahs are responsible for millions of deaths inside and abroad. The high intensity of words and phrases like execution, suicide, immolation, organ selling, and sleeping in cars, roofs, graves, and appliances’ cardboard, as well as ongoing news about the death of children, display how the rulers see the people.

In other words, these realities reveal that not only does the Iranian government violate the opponent’s fundamental human rights, but it does not care about people’s livelihood and welfare. Rampant poverty, high prices, inflation, expanded gap between society and state show the government drives the country to misery and backward.

The Islamic Republic founder Ruhollah Khomeini led millions of people, including teenagers and minors, to an eight-year war of erosion with Iran’s western neighbor Iraq. Khomeini and his eulogists, like current Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and former President and Propaganda Minister Mohammad Khatami, incited children to sacrifice their lives for opening minefields.

Franco-Iranian, German citizens arrested in Iran – Le Figaro

0

Paris: A person with dual French and Iranian citizenship and a German national were arrested in Iran more than two weeks ago, French daily newspaper Le Figaro reported on Friday.

Without citing its sources, the newspaper said the two individuals were arrested and detained before February 4 as leverage in anticipation of the sentencing of Iranian diplomat Assadolah Assadi in Belgium that day.

The diplomat was sentenced to 20 years in prison for planning to bomb an Iranian opposition rally in France in 2018.

Le Figaro said the Franco-Iranian was arrested in the desert flying a drone.

France’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither German nor Iranian officials were immediately reachable.

The arrests, if confirmed, would come at a sensitive time. The United States on Thursday signalled it was ready to talk with Iran about how both nations could return to a 2015 agreement that aimed to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

In a joint statement, the United States, France, Britain and Germany also called on Iran to release all their arbitrarily detained nationals.

As Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has increased its role and influence, it has become the leading security agency targeting dual nationals and foreigners. In reaction to former President Mohammad Khatami’s attempts to achieve limited accountability for the serial assassinations of dissidents in the late 1990s, several groups began to develop parallel intelligence institutions outside the control of his presidency. Under the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, those intelligence institutions retained and expanded their power outside the Intelligence Ministry’s oversight.  Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards are responsible for all foreign nationals and dual nationals arrested in Iran, mostly on espionage charges.

Rights activists have accused Iran of arresting dual nationals to try to win concessions from other countries. Tehran denies it holds people for political reasons and has accused many of the foreigners in its jails of espionage.
